Corn lethal necrosis (CLN).  This disease is very serious in Nebraska and Kansas causing large losses every year.  It is a mixture of two viruses, either one of which is rather mild by itself.  Maize chlorotic mottle virus is soil transmitted.  It is reported to be beetle transmitted, but in the central plains, beetle transmission is not a factor.  In the tropics where corn is planted continuously beetles may be a factor.  Actually the virus persists in the soil with the help of an unknown vector.  Infested fields remain infested until they are rotated out of corn.  The other virus in the complex is any member of the potyvirus group, all of which are aphid transmitted.  (Stanley G. Jensen, USDA-ARS, University of Nebraska)

High plains virus on corn.  It is known to be seed transmitted at very low levels and that could account for its broad distribution.  It is a very interesting virus unlike any other of plants or animals.  It has been found in every state from Nebraska to Washington and South Dakota to the Texas panhandle, Florida, Chile, Israel and possibly Australia and China.  Reports suggest that HPV or something like it has been found in the Great Lakes states, Canada and Russia.  The same microscopic mite transmits both HPV and wheat streak mosaic virus therefore there is often a mixed infection in corn and wheat.  Work has been done on the inheritance of resistance in maize and three dominant genes mapped for resistance to three chromosomes.  No resistance has been seen in wheat.  (Internet link for more information: <HT{icon}{~HTTP~}{ianrwww.unl.edu/ianr/plntpath/nematode/PPATHPER/Hpv.htm}> (Stanley G. Corn_lethal_necrosis

Corn lethal necrosis

High_plains_virus_on_corn

High plains virus on corn

Jensen, USDA-ARS, University of Nebraska)
